A well-known phrase in real estate is that itís all about 3 things: location, location, location. And when it comes to having a connection with a location, there are few names tied as strongly and deeply to Brisbane real estate as AV Postle & Co.
AV Postle & Co was born from the experience and tenacity of one man: Albert Victor Postle. He was born in August 1897 in Queenslandís Springside, just outside Pittsworth.
AV Postle & Co was started by Albert Postle in January 1936. He setup the real estate business in Elizabeth Street Brisbane.
He was joined by his 2 sons: Gordon and Don as well as a nephew Harold ìHappyî Howes. One of the areas to grow after the second World War was hotel brokering. In the 50ís and 60ís, competition among the breweries heated up, and so did the hotel broking business.
Queensland Breweries and Castlemaine had always competed for inner city hotels, but during the 60ís drinking habits changed. Workers began drinking at hotels closer to their homes, and in response Castlemaine began snapping up suburban pubs, many of the purchases brokered by AV Postle & Co.
At the same time, another phenomenon took place: the value of inner city property spiked. City hotels and pubs once valued for their customers were now far more valuable for their development potential. AV Postle & Co was once again in the right place at the right time, handling the sale of many Brisbane hotels as well as the clearance sales of hotel furniture and assets.
In 1960 the company expanded its offices to include a branch in Nundah, on Brisbaneís northside.
The Nundah branch included both residential sales as well as an auction mart for second hand goods and furniture. For the next decade, AV Postle & Co continued operating 2 offices ñ City and Northside. After fighting in two wars, helping expand the cityís boundaries northward and starting one of Brisbaneís most successful real estate agencies, Albert Victor Postle died in 1964, leaving Gordon, Don and Harold to keep his business, and his name, alive in AV Postle & Co.
The firm covered all aspects of Real Estate from a separate land subdivision company, to building and selling of new homes in all areas of the Brisbane region and general sale of businesses and in particular hotels and motels. In 1971 AV Postle & Co was incorporated. That same year, the city office moved to larger premises in the T&G Building, on the opposite corner from OíConnell House. The northside shop was closed and consolidated into the one large, and very active, city office.
The 1980ís saw an explosion in real estate ñ in values, in transactions, and in agencies. Suddenly suburban real estate offices began to spring up all over Brisbane. Where once clients would travel to the city to buy and sell real estate, now they just went to local agents in their own suburbs. Still based in central Brisbane, AV Postle & Co couldn'tít draw clients from the hungry suburban branches, and phased out this side of the business.
In 2002, Donís youngest son John rolled up his sleeves and stepped into the business, making it the third generation of Postleís to lead the company. John and his brothers had grown up with the business, and knew many of AV Postle & Coís clients and customers.
Unwittingly following his grandfatherís rules of work, John had elected to gain experience away from the family business, accumulating years of experience as a Manager at the Chartered Accountant firm Ernst & Young and later as a Partner of Peden Lavis & Co. A new era dawned for AV Postle & Co as John stepped up to lead the company. The office moved from the city to Clayfield, an area that had close ties not just to the business, but to the family.
The company specialises in the sale of residential properties in the inner northern suburbs of Brisbane. In September 2008, AV Postle & Co was admitted to the Bronze Hall of Fame for winning the very competitive City North News Business Achiever Award in Real Estate for three years running.
