HISTORY
As for most of Brisbane, Northgate began as farmland with land being released for residential purposes just after WWI. Houses were scattered throughout the suburb until after WWII, when production of postwar houses saw a boom in the area.
REAL ESTATE & DESIGN
Most of Northgate is situated off the main road, but Sandgate Road is close by for ease of access towards the city. The wide streets and interwar and postwar dwellings ensure that Northgate will be a family orientated suburb for many years ahead. Northgate does include an industrial estate along the train line.
SHOPPING
Nundah Village is a short walk/drive away for those wishing to shop locally; DFO Brisbane Airport is a 10 minute drive, and Westfield Chermside and Centro Toombul are also close.
SPORTS AND FITNESS
Northgate State school is surrounded by Northgate Reserve – a walking/bicycle track alongside a creek. There is a 24 hour gym located on Sandgate Road in nearby Virginia, and Northgate itself offers gyms as well. Brisbane Grammar Playing fields are also found here.
DISTANCE FROM CBD & TRANSPORTATION
Approximately 9km from the Brisbane City, Northgate is ideally located for CBD commuters - a 20 minute train ride will have commuters in the city. Northgate is also situated a 15 minute drive to Brisbane’s Domestic and International Airports. Northgate Train Station is one of the major stations in Brisbane’s north; the station services the Caboolture/Nambour train as well as Shorncliffe, meaning many express services stop at this station so commuters can head to other destinations.
FAMOUS LANDMARKS
The Golden Circle Cannery is one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks. Located on the border of Northgate and Banyo, the Cannery is located on over 16 hectares of land and processes ALL of the Golden Circle products sold throughout Australia. The Golden Circle Cannery used to include a cafe for visitors to sample their products, but the cafe has since closed its doors.
RESTAURANTS & CAFES
Sandgate Road sees the majority of cafes and restaurants in Northgate. Many other eateries, pubs and clubs are nearby in Virginia and Banyo, with Sandgate Road, again, offering the most choice; especially with the closer you head towards Brisbane.
SCHOOLS, EDUCATION & INSTITUTIONS
Northgate State School was originally opened in 1959 and much of the original buildings are still standing. Earnshaw College at Nundah offers non-government schooling, and the Australian Catholic University is a tertiary Campus also located in the neighbouring suburb of Banyo.
